I haven't decided the blog-a-bility of a second child, but in the meantime --- It's a Lemon!
Question: What do the following have in common?sesame seed-------- small lentil bean -------- raspberry
kidney bean --------- grape --------- kumquat
fig --------- lime --------- jumbo shrimp
lemon
Answer: They all correspond to the size our future baby!
Word is out: we're having a baby! Sarah is due May 20, and according to babycenter.com, my partner now has something inside of her "about the length of a lemon" from "head to bottom." The food analogies start at week five (sesame seed), and progress from there. After all the food analogies, we hope that the "something" is indeed a human being, and not a legume or - much worse - a crustacean.
We only found out at 7 or 8 weeks (variable, depending on who you ask). But according to Babycenter, soon after the pregnancy test, we found out when our future baby was already the size of a raspberry (see above). We're in our second trimester, at 14 weeks. It's been kind of hard not to blog about this, especially considering the blog's title, and the fact that this is just about all I've been thinking about every day in my life for the last month.
Sociology of food analogies?
Take a look at this progression of food comparisons of embroynic/fetal development. I suppose comparing your future child to food is just good for a quick visual. But in our heads, "baby" has been expanding and shrinking as the weeks (and foods) progress. First a raspberry, then back to just a kidney bean. Then it's a grape. Grapes seem larger than kidney beans, but aren't they smaller than raspberries? Or are these extra large beans and grapes? And what the hell size is a kumquat? I think the progression should go: kidney bean, grape, raspberry, kumquat. And surely something else comes before a fig. Those things are huge; or do they refer to the fruit itself, once we have cracked open the shell? And - um - jumbo shrimp? I'm not sure what to think of these food choices, but they are certainly much more fun than posting pictures of other people's fetuses.
All food-ing aside, we're super excited about our first child. Stay tuned, for this will definately stick as a weekly feature.

Wow! Congratulations!!!
Holy babies! That was a surprise answer to that little puzzler!
Congrats!
YAY! I can talk about it now!! YIPPEEEE!!! I LOVE being on "this side" of things. I told Elizabeth on Sunday. She was very excited ....
Jen & Carly: Thanks! Mainly, I've wanted to collect all of these fruits and vegetables (+ crustacean) to see if they really act in the supposed progression. I've since decided that since I eat a lot of organic food, the assumed sizes might be different. (You know, GMO super-foods, frankenfoods, etc etc)
Kristi: Yes, I suppose that means the news is "bloggable" too. Go crazy.
Congrats to you and Sarah! I look forward to the weekly updates!
Congratulations! That's so awesome. I look forward to the baby blogging. :D
Congratulations Marc!!! I'm really happy for you both!
Congrats on the addition to your family. Things will change your life. It is a 24/7 job, but worth every minute of duress. My daughter is 13 months, and totally awesome.
Congrats! Hope all goes well.
By the way, did you know that Ellen and Nick are engaged?
Susan, I heard just last week! Many congrats to the family and enjoy the planning of that too :)
wow, congrats! i wonder if this means you'll be blogging more or less -- seems it could go either way: having a baby - first or sedond - means there's so much to talk about, and also more time taking away from blogging... but that's really secondary. enjoy the process of adding a new family member!
congrats again you guys!
Congratulations, Marc and Sarah :)
How are you? Hope all is well!
